Discussion:
Best place to demo yamaha / high end kits in UK / Midlands sort of area?

Hi,
I'm hoping to pick up a Yamaha Recording Custom kit soon, OR a
birch/maple custom absolute. To make my mind up which I'd like to be
able to test them side by side. Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK,
preferably in the Midlands (I'm in Leicester) where I can do this? Or
where the best place to buy would be?

Seems not many places do the high end Yamaha stuff from the searches
I've done.

I've more or less decided on the RC after flirting with the DW
collectors for a while, but it'd be nice to be able to compare a few
high end kits side by side.

Cheers!
Mark.

Give http://www.birminghamdrumcentre.co.uk/ a try, near enough to you.
They only list the Oak Custom on the pro-end Yamaha bit on their site,
but it's worth calling them to see if they're expecting any stock soon.

I thought it odd that they only had the oak custom, but yes perhaps the
website doesn't show all of their stock so will give 'em a bell.

Thanks :-)

Will do :-) Just got to find somewhere first that has them both set up
- hard to A/B test in different places but I bet that is what I'll have
to do.

Hmm, I've been playing RC's for many years, and I'm looking forward to
picking up some DW's some day.

The yammies always sound good and the hardware has never let me down once,
over 17 years and countless shows. But I like the tone of the DW's better.

I'd love to own both if I had the money. I'm really hoping I can A/B
test them in the same shop. Either way I imagine I'll be "drawn" to the
kit I like best.

I also want to try the Yamaha Custom Absolutes too (maple and birch). I
like the idea of having a maple BD and birch toms.

It'll be my first high end kit whatever I get. I've had my Premier
XPK's for around 13 years now!

The RC kits are hard to find in stock new, in fact my local Sam Ash has just
picked up the first one I've seen on the shelf in maybe 10 years.

And I have to add, the finish on the new kit was a real disappointment
compared to the old kits. It's the 'cherry wood' finish, but it looks more
like tobacco stain brown. It's also a much thinner finish, I could clearly
see the irregularities in the wood grain from ten feet away. Back in the day
the finish was mirror smooth.

YMMV....

That's worrying that the finish is going down hill on it. What about on
the Maple/Birch Custom Absolutes? Have you seen any of those around?

The ones I've seen in person look wonderful, but even those are getting a
little hard to find on the shelf, at least not over here.

Now in the UK, I'd take a look at the Sonor kits. A friend has a Force 3007
set and it's a nice kit and sounds fat. If you have the budget the Delites
and the S Cliassics are *very* nice. I guess it depends on your budget.

I looked at Sonor some time back, and for some reason they just didn't
do it for me. I can't remember what put me off - maybe the kits I heard
weren't tuned well or to my liking. I will give them another look as it
was long time ago.

Thanks,
Mark.

Great kits, those XPK! You can get a 4 pice 10-12-14 22 for around $400
with snare.

Yup that's the setup I have, except I purchased a 2nd hand Signia snare
and been using that with it. Nice snare that! Can't beleive I walked
into my drum lesson one day and it was just sitting there for sale in
exactly the same colour as my kit! It had to be mine..

Seema kinda high to me, and I really don't like the gold hardware.
Sonor's HiLite Exclusive copper hardware is another matter altogether!

Yes, it's 24k.
Plated over brass by a reputable plater who doesn't skip steps to save
time.

ick... don't get me started. Brass plated hardware can look good... real
good. But all that world max, Chinese stuff is done sooooo cheaply....
skipping all those steps good platers don't skip. I swear, you can see
through the brass on that stuff.

When I first saw "brass plated" hoops at world max, I thought it was the
bad, florescent lighting. I took it outside to see it in the sunlight
and was like, "hmmm, I didn't know brass was yellow."
