Question: For those of you with kids...

Those of you that play drums and have kids: do you ever let them play your
set or indulge their need to get behind your kit and let it all out? I know
some of you have kids that inherited your musical skills and you probably
find it good quality time/teaching moments, and some of you don't.

A little about me: I'm 35 with 2 boys (13, 10) and had my first drum set
when I was 10. I liked playing it, but one day when I was 14 my parents
inexplicably made me give it away; I missed it terribly. Then came college,
apartment living, and finally one day about 3-4 years ago I decided that
with a little money coming in I would treat myself, so I splurged on a $5000
Pearl Export series. I picked up right where I left off nearly a decade
before; it was like old times playing and having fun.

My kids have always bee starry-eyed over my drums and, while they
occasionally ask if they can play, they really don't have that real sense of
stick-to-it-iveness that comes with really learning drums (and I really don't
think I can stomach too much random kid-jam on them). This may sound a
little awful but, I admit, I kind of like having my "me" time with my drums.
I guess it's sort of cool being both parent and overgrown kid at the same
time. (Sidebar: it can be really funny sometimes when I'm down there
playing and they are doing their homework; I have the iPod in my ear full
blast and when they come down to ask me to keep quite and they scare me and
mess me up, I can give into the temptation of grounding them for it.)

So, does anyone else here with kids ever feel like that? How do you
drummers handle your kids' bussing temptation to drum?

Do you mean you spent $500. on an Export kit? $5k is insane. Exports
are, I beleive, discontinued, but you can catalog a shell pack of
VMX's for $1050. If you truly layed out that kind of $$ for that kit,
or any kit for that matter, I wouldn't let any non-player near them. I
have numerous kits, every one bought used. I buy used because
generally, they are pre-bumped and bruised. When a little something
does go wrong I'm not happy, but I'm not ready to kill someone either.
In answer to your question, yes, I allow my son and daughter to play
my drums. I don't allow them to trash them. Nor do I allow them to
trash my bass, and bass rig, or my piano, or my pa system, or anything
else that belongs to me.

It could be a kit like this;

:-)

I

say let them have fun with it, keep it light. If they express an
interest or joing band get them a good teacher.

Personally, I would keep an eye on Craigslist or tag sales for an El
Cheapo kit for them. That way they can have something around that
they're allowed to play, and you can see how serious they are about it
without risking your good gear. My boys are only 2 and 3 and they
already have a little kit that they jam on.

It would be awesome to have one of my boys sitting at a kit next to
mine, but they're not very good with rules yet, so if I leave it
around they'll destroy it.

I let the kids play my kit. I don't have any of my own kids still
living in the house, but our singer brings her son along occasionally,
and during a family reunion recently I let all the kids play my kit.
They're drums... they're supposed to be hit... what harm can come of
it besides perhaps getting young people interested in music and
playing their own kit someday. I gave my 7-yr-old nephew an old
beater kit of mine for X-mas three yrs back and now he's a dang fine
drummer and playing in bands way past his age-group. Sweeet...
