I saw an Acrolite in a second hand store today that had an odd finish
on the outside of the shell...never seen one like it. It was a blue/
olive badge with a hammertone grey glossy finish. Was part of a
student kit, so I doubt it was refin'd. Any idea what this is? Maybe a
run of oddballs with the hammer finish 'cause they got a good deal on
it and were out of the regular smooth stuff....who knows.

According to "The Ludwig Book" by Rob Cook, throughout the first part of its
long life "the Acrolite was anodized, producing a medium shade of grey. The
shade varied a bit from year to year until the mid 1980s when Ludwig began to
powder coat the Acrolite shell, producing a lighter shade of grey. In 1993,
the powder coating was changed to the 'Galaxy' finish; a black metal-flake
finish resembling black sparkle."

I personally don't like the powder coated shells. In my opinion the anodized
Acrolite shell is one of the best sounding drums ever produced.

Yep, definitely the powder coated variety from the mid 1980s. How much are they asking for
it? Probably not a bad sounding drum, but I personally wouldn't bother with it unless it's
WAY cheap (less than $75); at that price you could probably turn it around on eBay for a
decent profit. I've seen people claim they are "rare", but I don't really buy that; I've
seen plenty of 'em. If I was buying one to keep, I would definitely look for one of the
older anodized models; you can find them all day long on eBay for under $100. Good luck.
