Hi gang, I haven't posted here for a long time!
I was watching some Brian Setzer and I hear a lot of what sounds like
Bernie playing the rim on his snare. But staring intently at the video/
dvd I never see him actually hitting the snare rim. Is he actually
playing that snare rim and playing back beat too with one hand or am I
just hearing things??? At one point I figured maybe someone else in
the orchestra was playing snare rim and we just don't see him.
I searched on Youtube hoping to see someone dementrating how to do it
but didn't find anything.
Anyone?

How about posting a link to the video you're talking about so we have some
chance of understanding the sights and sounds involved?

Here's a youtube of the Dirty Boogie.
As soon as the song starts you can hear whats sounds like someone
playing the rim on a snare. It's the same on the DVD, and happens in
several songs. In this Youtube video you can clearly see Bernie
Playing and it sure doesn't look like he's hitting the rim of his
snare.

OOPS, meant to say> As soon as the singing starts it's sound like a
shuffle beat starts on the snare rim. Haven't had any coffee yet!

It's definitely not Bernie Dresel on the drums who's making that sound. If I'm
not mistaken it's a side effect of the upright bass player's "slapping"
technique that's doing it. If you listen closely you can hear quite a few
places where that sound drops out, and if you're lucky enough to also catch a
glimpse of the bass player during those sections he's plucking the strings
rather than slapping them.

That would explain much. I've never been around a 'stand up' bass, so
I am unfamiliar with the sounds.
Thanks, it was really bugging me!

Not all standup players do this any more. The technique was pioneered
by Pops Foster, who is credited with using it to make the upright bass
the choice of jazz bands. (Before him, many bands used tuba. Not as
good for fast passages, but the tuba was louder.)
