Discussion:
Rack tom size -- 13 or 14?

Hi all

I have Taye Studio Maple and want to add a third rack tom to the kit. I
currently have 10x8.5 and 12x9 rack toms (and a 16x16 floor tom)

I am wondering which is best to add: 13x10 or 14x11?

I have heard some people have had trouble tuning the 14x11.

Then again, will the 13x9 provide enough separation from the 12x8?

I play classic rock -- Dead, Allmans, Feat, etc -- in clubs where the
bass drum is miced but the toms usually aren't.

Thanks!

I like what you have already, I wouldn't even add another tom... but
if I did I would add an 8" on the other side.

Just to fuel the discussion :

-adding a 13" gives you a 13"/16" 4-pc capability. Lots of people
like that. the 13" wouldn't give you anything worthwhile to the
10-12-16 you alreday have. Too close to the 12 and too far from the
16 IMHO.

The 14" is what I'd choose if those two sizes are the only choices.
You also get the benefit of being able to do a 10-14 or a 12-14 4-pc
combo on top of the 12-16. Much more flexibility and it'll sound good
with what you already have...

Get an 8, and tune 'em all high, so they sing. They'll project better that
way.

I agree. I have a 10, 12, 14 configuration on my SCP kit. I got a 13 on eBay
, well just because it matched the kit beautifully, played it on a few gigs
and decided I was hitting it just because "it was there". Now, the 13" is on
eBay and I'm sorry to say, I'll make at least an $80 profit :-(. The 12 and
14 are close enough (in your case 16, you've got the low end covered, big
time. I'd go with the 8" also.

All right you guys, you can't suggest an 8" tom if the question was
between a 13" and a 14". I'm sorry, YOU'RE DISQUALIFIED. :-)

Even though I too like 8" toms, I'd go with the 14" just because I
wouldn't want to miss out on all that untapped potential between the 12"
and the 16". I wouldn't even consider the 13" (unless I bagged the
12"); like Marc, I don't think there'd be enough separation between that
and the 12".

With the right heads I can't imagine the 14x11 being hard to tune; most
people find a 16x16 to be the more troublesome size.

I use a 11x14 as my FT on my USA MAple kit, and it's real easy to tune. Love
that drum dial!

You should try a 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, and a 13x16 ft setup one day. The 10x14
is a really cool drum.

Yeah? I don't know if I've ever played one. What am I missing?

Deeper sound than a 12 but has more articulation than a 14 floor.

True, but with the presence of a 10" tom we've already made the break
from tradition. If we begin with a configuration that looks like this:
10-**-12-**-**-**-16

I was just saying that this:
10-**-12-**-14-**-16

or this
10-**-**-13-**-**-16

makes more sense (to me) than this:
10-**-12-13-**-**-16
