Howdy all:

I am looking to purchase a brass snare. Most likely a 6 1/2 x 14 as I
like the sound and feel of that size much better than a thinner depth.
I am thinking of either grabbing a Pearl Free Floating brass or
Worldmax Black Hawg. I am setting my budget for this at $350.00 max. A
couple questions for you guys and gals:

1. Any suggestions for other brands/models that you like?

2. Does anyone here own a 5x14 Worldmax brass snare and how do you
like it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a 4x14 World Max Black pup. It's a great sounding drum. The
only issue I had was the throw off but that was easily replaced. I've
played the deeper brass and hammered brass drums and they are well
worth the money IMO.

I don't know anyone who likes their free floater after buying another
drum, who wasn't in denial. :-)
The big problem with the FF's is that giant hunk of metal the shells sit
in. Despite their claims to the contrary, most of the shells you stick
in the thing sound way too close to the same to be worth it. (*see note
below about hoops)

Keep your eyes open for a Brass Pearl Sensitone or similar model. They
are commonly on sale for well under $200, new, and way less on ebay, used.

Yes. It's a the exact same pieces and parts as the ones you will see on
any "custom builders" websites, and probably half of the name brand
makers.
It's a great drum-- it's bread and butter. It's cheap enough that you
can buy different top hoops (brass, die cast, wood, etc.) for it and
turn it into a completely different sound.

*I contend that changing hoops on a snare drum will change the sound
more than changing the shell in a Free Floater, especially with die cast
rims. If you have single flanged brass, wood, and die cast hoops for
just the top, you have three snare drums.

Unfortunately I have to agree with this. I have 13" Sensitone, and it
is a GREAT drum, and I only paid $150 for it. 13"x6.5 I think is what I
have.
