Post by jwaldPost by -MIKE-Post by jwaldPost by Pete PembertonPost by jwaldI was going through the local Craigslist and stumbled on these.

I called, and the seller tells me that these where raw maple shells
shipped to him by a guy named Vince Dee, straight from Ludwig in
Chicago. Seems as though Vince is an endorser, and has toured with
oldies and country acts. The seller had them painted the current color.
He claims that they are Rockers. Now, I don't know if he's looking at
the heads or what, but anything I can find doesn't mention maple and
Rockers in the same sentance. Look at the 4 spurs in the pictures. I'm
no Ludwig expert, but those tubs look to be closer to Classics to me.
Too bad the badge and lugs is out of focus. What do you think?
I would tend to agree. Also note the modular hardware.
Pete
Thanks, but who exactly are you agreeing with? Are you saying that
modular hardware was never used on the Classics? The story I got was
that his wifes' cousin is an endorser for Ludwig The seller wanted
some drums and called the cousin. The cousin/endorser when to the
shop, grabbed some shells and hardware and sent the unassembled kit to
the seller. He put them together and now they are for sale. I looked
at them today and found them to have the Chicago keystone transitional
badges that were used, according to what I've found, prior to the move
to Monroe, N.C. The shells look to be 4 ply with a maple interior.
Some combination of maple poplar? Will pictures help?
He's saying that modular hardware 9in the pic) wasn't used on rockers.
From what i know, Rockers were spray painted inside, too, but that may
not be accurate.
They look like Classics to me. I had heard story of Ludwig putting
Rocker badges on Classic drum for endorsers, to spur some interest in
the Rocker line. But don't hold me to it being fact.

That's what I thought he meant but just wasn't sure. From what i can
find, the early rocker badges were black and white, similar to the B&O
style. Like I said, these have transitional keystones. I think I might
pull the trigger.- Hide quoted text -

Trigger pulled.
Here's some pictures from this afternoon. Tell me if you see anything
*Rocker* about them. I contacted Vince Dee, the Ludwig endorser. He's
foggy about the kit and is on edge about copping to the *kit to
friends or relative* part. Can't say as I blame him there. He did say
the Rockers used modular hardware though.

I spent the afternoon looking inside the shells and tightening
everything up while I was at it. As per the sellers story, the
original finish of the shells were maple. He had them painted Cadillac
pearl white. The primer coat was red. Look at the pictures and you
will see it all. When I got the heads off I found primer over-spray
and paint on the bearing edges. I should have taken pictures of that
too. Using a green Scotchpad, I removed all the paint and primer,
leaving a very nice, clean edge. The kit is dirty and I will tear it
down in a few weeks to really clean them up. Right now, I want to play
them. I swapped heads on the 13 to get something better to look at,
but I'll be re-heading eventually. I can tell you though, that this
kit is a beast; both in weight and tone. I have never been much of a
tuner. I never like the sound I get, but these tubs tuned up real
nice. Quick too. Thanks for all the help.
