What are the latest and best alternatives to check out the news groups, now
that Verizn is cancelling them today?
It's wierd, newsgroups have been part of my computer life since the
beginning.

You have to register, but it's free and has been great for me. I don't think
it covers binary newsgroups, though.

I too use eternal-semptember.org as my primary provider for reading
Usenet groups, but I also signed up for the one-time $10 payment to
http://www.astraweb.com to get 25GB of downloads (that's a LOT). I use
that service if I need to access any binary groups.

Why not Google Groups? Serious question.

The format sucks.

I use an email app for newsgroups, so I don't have to wait for a script
heavy website to load with a bunch of ads and pop-up crap and all the
rest. It's way too clunky unless you have a 2ghz processor, which I don't.

On my app, the newsgroups and messages look just like my email. I click
on a different folder and that's all it takes, it all looks the same and
is incorporated with the rest of my email.

That's why I hate webmail and web forums I guess.

I get it now, thanks all.
Guess I never gave it much thought. I've been here in this group
since 1998 and never viewed it any other way than as a website. Even
with all the riff-raff here over the years, I've never seriously
considered filtering (but skipped over lots of crap at one time or
another). I've never noticed any ads or encountered much delay due to
load times, but that would drive me to some other alternative for
sure. Good to know!

Sorry, I hit "reply" instead of "reply group" the first time.

What he said, also, with google groups, there are no filters. With
eternal-september you can use almost any newsreader and use that reader's
filters to block whatever knuckleheads you don't care to be annoyed by. In
another newsgroup, that's almost 50% of the posts.
