What do you use? I've used a Crown headset for years with great success, but it has come time to maybe go back to a boom stand set-up. I hate the idea, but I need to be able to get away from the mic for harmonies and setch. The cheapo stand I have will only go so high, and the the result is that I am getting tangled in the cable, or wacking the mic. I thought about the Ultimate, tilting style, and install my own boom. It should give me length and height, but I want to check here first. Ideally, something overhead and hanging would work great, but I don't know about the weight of the studio stands for gigging. Thanks.

I use an Ultimate boom. Not the best, and it does pick up the drums
pretty good, so in small places, kick and vocal mic is all I use. Gets
the job done. Shallow stages sometimes it gets in the way. I don't
really like the rubber know to tighten everything, and would like
something better, but everything I see that is better is much heavier.

I have the Crown headset too, and there are times when I wish I had a
wireless for it so I could get around on stage or even at practice.

My only demand is that it's not a tripod. Space is at a premium behind the
kit so I stick with the old school lead base. I also like a telescoping boom
so I don't have to worry about the far end hitting thigs when I swing the
mic away.

Not sure what mic I'd want to use, I really hate having the mic itself in
the way so I'd love to find a decent side address mic.

I got no real answer for all the problems you stated - I either whack
myself in the eye if it's too close (thank gid I wear glasses or I'd
be a one-eyed drummer by now), or it hits a wall or something when I
try to swing the boom away. I think the one that's worked best so far
is simply using a straight stand with a longer (2-foot?) gooseneck
just off the hi-hat side. Less floor space used, no boom to bump
around, and easy enough to push up and away for less mic-bleed and eye-
poking. But you will have to lean over a bit to sing, and I only sing
a handful of songs so it's not a huge issue for me. I use a regular
vox mic - either an Audix OM5 or an SM57 (because I have a bunch of
them in my bag anyways).

Funny that Pete mentioned the bleed factor - I've actually used a 57
as an overhead and simply swung the mic down and over for my 2-3
singing songs and then put it back up after I was done each time.
Worked great!

When I was gigging full-time, back in the 70's (5 hours a night, 5
nights a week, in top-40 bands) I found that a gooseneck worked better
than a boom. I still use it.

I position it to my left, as you'd expect. I don't usually swing it out
of the way, but I easily could, without the issue of the counterweight
hitting me or getting obstructive.

Yeah, I use the old leaden base, not a tripod. Works fine unless I'm
outdoors on a slope, in which case I have to fine a sandbag or something
to add weight.
