You guys will probably hate me for putting this song in your heads, but
the other day (for whatever reason) I had "Love Will Keep Us Together"
by the Captain and Tennille stuck in my own little cranium (I think I'd
recently heard it on the radio or something). I actually quite liked
that song when I was a young 13 year old twerp; I remember wearing out
the 45 on my old record player, and I probably even tried to play the
drums along with it. I never really gave much thought to who the
drummer might be, but 34 years later as I sat there on the throne (the
porcelain one, if you must know) recalling in my head the style of the
drum parts it suddenly occurred to me: "You know what? I'll betcha
fifty bucks it was Hal Blaine playing drums on that song!" I finished
my business, closed the lid with a loud rim shot, and made a beeline for
Wikipedia where my hunch was confirmed. Hal Blaine! That guy was
everywhere back then. I remember being disappointed that neither of the
two little "Partridge" kids played any of the drum parts on my old
Partridge Family albums; it was some mysterious impostor name "Hal
Blaine". And I'll be damned if it wasn't that same guy playing those
incredibly inventive rhythms on the album that got me playing drums in
the first place: "Whipped Cream" by Herb Alpert (of course, the album
cover was pretty inspirational as well...). And all those Beach Boys
tunes? I gotta thank the guy; if it wasn't for Hal Blaine I may have
never picked up the sticks.

Yes! Blaine was a huge influence for me as well. Hawaii Five 0, MASH,
Partridge, all those hits back then. Great stuff!

Hal Blaine might have claimed the credit, but all those tracks were
actually played by Bernard Purdie.
