greetings to all who might remember me.. must be 4-5 yrs since i last wrote
something. been lurking every now and then, but i thought id drop a
question now...
earlier this spring i managed to nearly cut off my left hands thumb with a
hunting knife (... yes ...) thus leaving the finger intact but severing the
muscles + nerves ie. i have no "feeling" in my left thumb. being a trad grip
player this more or less ruined my left hands ability to play. after
spending most of the spring & summer this far trying to re-learn stuff using
matched grip (which btw isnt that easy either having no power in thumb...),
i managed to break my right leg from under the knee a month back. and being
a single kick player... you know the rest. the cast came off last friday and
ive tried some feathering on the kick... and ive totally lost what i could
do. the broken bone tore right through the muscle and thats far from being
healed.
so, i find myself in a very awkward situation. i have few (7-10 yrs)
students to whom i now have very hard time trying to demonstrate rolls,
luckily i dont make my bread teaching drums...
has anyone of ye fellow drummers ever been in a similar situation where you
have had to re-learn stuff because of some accident etc? any tips that might
help me to regain even some of the skill i had achieved in the last 20+ yrs
of playing. luckily i do also play hand percussion, so that i still have
something left to bang at.

as for rmmp, it seems awfully quiet, has everyone wandered off to myspace,
facebook, etc. of course, some of the old flamings still seem to be here -
but ís it just holidays or are newsgroups withering away?

Sorry to hear about the challenges you are dealing with.

In regards to your left hand - I seem to recall someone that played
holding the stick between the index and middle finger with the fulcrum
being right at the base of the fingers. Might be worth a little
experimentation.

Jeez you're like that knight in The Holy Grail. "It's just a scratch"
meanwhile he only has his head and torso remaining. Many years ago I had to
come back from a shattered wrist. Talk to a occupational therapist. They
can come up with exercises for you to do to make up for weaknesses.

It's been drying up here. ISPs dropping usenet, busy lives, etc.

Facebook, MySpace, personal blogs, etc...
Myself, I quit following RMMP about 7 or so years ago because of all
the childish crap that was going on. Over the years I've checked-in
from_time_2_time to find that things had not changed much, so I quit
bothering all together. Had it not been for the upcoming NAMM show in
Nashville, I wouldn't have checked-in today. I know a lot of us SONOR
geeks went over to The Rev's place & others went to Ronn Dunnett's
Drumsmith. I think the world has changed quite a bit over the past
few years and as a result, the days of the UseNet groups are pretty
much a thing of the past.

Dam, that sux, hopefully time will help much of the issues. Here's to a
speedy recovery!

Another grip you may look at and one I use when my hands get tired is
holding from a matched grip, the stick with the back three fingers, not
useing the index finger or thumb. For demo purposes not ideal, but you
can still do most of what you can do trad or matched.

Pete,

One of my former students went on to Drummer's Collective and studies with a
teacher there, Pete Retzlaff, who uses, teaches, and advocates the "back
fingers" grip of which you speak. Jim Chapin (R.I.P.) describes this grip in
what he calls this "Moeller for Hard Hitters". When Tom demonstrated the
technique, he was able to play blazingly fast and with a lot of control.

I haven't committed to that grip completely, but have been migrating my
fulcrum from its original index finger position, to index/middle, to mostly
middle, and now middle/back. It works out pretty well, but I still have to
rely on the "front" fingers a bit for precision, especially on doubles.

I can do singles pretty fast especia;lly bursts with the grip, not as
great for rolls, but it works.

Interesting....
