I don't want to drop a fortune on a bass drum mic. I will use it in a
ported and non ported bass drum. Mostly non ported. Playing hard rock
at the moment as well. I had an AKG D112 and it wasn't for me. Any
suggestions would be appreicated.

I always sound like a broken record when this question comes up - Audix D6.
New price is $199, used about $150. They sound great, and they're tough.

The only thing is that it's designed to have a response with a lot of bottom
and some highs, and a broad scoop in the mids. Basically matching the EQ
settings for a modern kick sound. If you're using a low-buck mixer like I
am, it makes it a *lot* easier to get a good sound.

Agreed completely -- Audix D6 is a great economy-line BD mic.
Excellent for the price.

Look at the Sennheiser e602 as well. Same kind of money as the D6.
Excellent mic.

I've been using an Audio Technica ATM Pro 25 for YEARS. (My wife
bought it for me for Christmas BEFORE we were married--and that was
almost 16 years ago.) It's totally reliable, and works well in my 18"
and 20" kicks (which I use predominately).
