I am anticipating upgrading from basswood drums to maple. I used to believe
that since some drums are maple they are, by default, better quality drums
when in fact there are some cheap low end maple kits. My Taye Tourpro's are
excellent quality construction and materials and I want to make sure I don't
actually downgrade. What are some of the lower quality maple drums that I
should avoid, and which are the best bang for the buck?

I figure I'll have $600-700 for a shell pack. Used in good condition is
preferred, but not opposed to buying new. If you have a kit to sell please
contact me at ***@gmail.com.

Hey Chris,

These are my current sizes, and I'd be fine with these dimensions or close:

10x8
12x9
16x16
22x18

I'm not too picky. I'd like to stick with a 22" bass drum, though I've
heard some 20"s that sound pretty good. Prefer short toms, no "square" tom
sizes. Floor tom(s) must have legs. A second floor tom would be great. Do
you have a kit to sell, or recommendations?

I have a bunch of Starclassic Maples in "Cherry Black", some of which I
bought with the intention of selling, once I "cherrry picked" sizes
preferable to parts of my existing kit. The sizes I have aren't compatible
with your wish list, especially because I only have legless floor toms.
Buying the Tama parts new would cost hundreds, so it's been my quest to find
some honest-to-goodness 3 legged floor toms on eBay, or even used parts to
convert mine. So far, no luck.

I would honestly recommend you look at the ash Dominion drums from
ddrum. They have kits in your configuration for about 8-900 new. I have
the pocket kit, which is a 12x8 with 14x12 and 16x12 floor toms. The
kick is a canon, 20x20. They sound great. The finishes, especially the
burts, are gorgeous.

Cast hoops, too!

The Dominion Ash Pocket are sweet looking drums, and dirt cheap! I'd have
cash left over. Interesting, non-traditional sizes. These would be perfect
for me, except I'm not sure about that 16x12 floor tom.. really, 12"?. I
sure like the "thud" of a 16x16. Does this one even come close? I suppose
at that price I could add some orphan 16x16.

The only problem is there are no local retailers so I'd be buying without
ever trying. I'm okay with that if there was enough feedback from drummers
that gig with these. What's the word on the street?

16 I have is low, deep, and resonates forever. I am using the stock top
head on the bottom, and a black suede emperor batter for a great deep
rock sound. I added the 10", so I have 10-12 rack, and 14-16 ft. It's a
great kit, and I have a Gretsch kit. It sounds pretty close. I actually
like how the 16x12 sounds over the traditional 16x16. I did add the
Pearl suspension feet for the legs. Try them, you will not be
disappointed.

I have a Premier XPK all maple set available: 20x18, 14x14, 12x9, 10x8
with matching 14 sd in a magenta lacquer color. No hardware, although
I do have a set of Premier available at extra cost. Beautiful set,
brand new. Price is somewhere between $750 and $850 depending on
shipping. Give me a call if you're interested. 345-1714.
