Hey guys, I hope you dont mind me posting this in your forum, but our
London, UK band Lunar Rising is in desparate need for a new drummer!
(our drummer had to move away.. :( ) We have big plans and
everything is on hold until we find one! We recently got to the final
of a London competition and have had quiet a few nice things said
about us :)

Have a listen through the link below but as a description we are kinda
atmospheric folk (UK as opposed to US) that will be developing our
sound more.. We are currently female vocals with 2 backing singers,
acoustic guitar (using elec for atmospheres in future), piano/keys,
violin, bass. We also want to have an acoustic version of our set too
so we are more flexible and this will invlove the use of any
percussion you can get your hands on! We've had a few time wasters
really slow us down lately so please have a good think about whether
or not it's what you want :) All that aside though, the band are a
really nice bunch of people who are also dedicated. Quite a rare mix!

Please get in touch with me (***@transientmusic.co.uk) or the band
(***@lunar-rising.co.uk) if you are interested or have any questions
at all.

The web address is http://www.lunar-rising.co.uk

Many thanks!

(my comments are not intended as in insult to the OP, but since we're on
a tangent...)

Pete, one of the red flags that shows me a group is not worth wasting my
time on, is when they say something like, "We want to practice for
X (amount of time) to get tight, then we'll get some gigs."

If X is a measurement longer than "hours," that's when I find an excuse
to get off the phone. :-)

One thing that might keep me on the phone is, "We have a gig Friday,
can you make it?"

Q: Why is being a drummer worse than being a toilet.
A: The toilet only had to deal with one @$$hole at a time.

Jay

Jay,

This isn't necessarily directed at you, but you've touched on a common
situation and a pet peeve of mine. As Mike said, no offense, but take from
my post what you can and try to see things from a professional drummer's
point of view, or what you call a "session drummer" and others call a
"mercenary drummer".

I may even post this on Craigslist, in response to all those ads that say
"PROFESSIONAL DRUMMER WANTED - NO MERCS (mercenaries)"...

So, you have a band that you feel has a lot of promise, but you need a
drummer (arguably the most important member of a band). You're tired of
having your time wasted by "wannabees", amateurs and flakes. Of course, you
want a professional drummer for your original band, but can't or won't pay
him or her. As my late Italian grandfather would say, when I told him my
band didn't get paid on certain gigs: "What are you an idiot? Does a plumber
come to your house and unclog your drain for free?"

If your band has aspirations of being successful in the music *business*,
there are expenses. Most bands are more than willing to overpay for press
kits, websites, flyers, CD's, etc. to promote themselves, but so many are
not willing to pay professional musicians who will MAKE THE PRODUCT BETTER,
and not waste their time.

I understand that when your band isn't making any money, it's hard to dig
into your pockets to pay someone. However, if you're truly serious, truly
have big plans for your future, and have had your time wasted by, well,
"time wasters", can you afford NOT to hire a professional? Wouldn't it make
sense to have each band member chip in a few bucks/quid (sorry, Yankee,
here) per rehearsal/gig, to keep a pro drummer around until (if?) the band
starts making some money? Consider it an investment in your future. Once the
band starts making money, you'll begin to recoup your investment. And if you
don't end up making any money, at least you were able to hold onto a
professional drummer who made your band better, rather than always being "on
hold" or looking for that elusive final member.

Consider things from the pro drummer's point of view... It's what we do for
a living. I happen to have tens of thousands of dollars worth of
professional equipment, I've spent countless thousands of hours practicing,
and probably over $50,000 or $60,000 on music education (which I continue,
to this day). I have a reliable source of transportation. I also happen to
own a home (in which I have a rehearsal/recording studio), which requires
not only a lot of my money, but a lot of my time.

So, of course it'll cost you to hire me, but you can be assured of several
things: I will never flake out on you, I will show up for gigs and
rehearsals with my kit sounding and looking great, I will always know your
material inside and out and perform it as if my life depended on it because,
actually, my life DOES depend on it. If I like you, I may even sing! If that
isn't worth a few bucks per gig to you, then maybe you're not as confident
in the future of your band as you think you are.

Gigs cost money and time, both of which are scarce in the lives of many.
Gas, tolls, parking, wear and tear or breakage of sticks, heads, cymbals. If
there's no pay, a gig is an expensive proposition for a drummer, not to
mention we ALL HATE lugging our gear around. No professional will stick
around in that situation for very long, if at all. Think about it.

Again, not directed anyone in particular, but inspired by the general
mindset of the no-pay for play crowd. RANT OFF

YMMV,
CM

So, you have a band that you feel has a lot of promise, but you need a
drummer (arguably the most important member of a band).
Great stuff, as usual.

To touch on this particular point...
I've heard many band leaders (including Sting, from the stage, when
introducing Keith Carlock) say, "A band is only as good as the drummer."

I regularly work for a record producer friend who brings me in as sort
of a catch-all... to do all, some, or nothing when he's producing an
album for a band. If the drummer is good, I'll tune the drums and help
him get great sound to tape. If the drummer is decent, I may play on
some tracks. If the drummer sucks, I end up on the whole thing.

Anyway, this producer once explained part of his process as, "dumbing
down to the drummer." He means that he can only expect the talent/skill
level of the band to be as high as the drummer, and never rise above
that. It doesn't matter how great the lead guitarist is or if the singer
is ridonculously talented, or if they have the greatest songs in the
world... the band as a whole, will only be as good as the drummer.

Take it with a grain of salt, but this guy has people in the rock-n-roll
hall of fame on his speed dial. :-)
