Everyone,

I'm new to drumming and have the following question:

I bought a Tama Imperialstar drum set last weekend and the snare drum head
has a some coating loss because "it was turned too lose and that is better
than if if was tuned too tight" per the salesman. Not real concerned about
the lose of coating, but I wonder if he was feeding me a line or being
honest about this.

TIA!

Typical full-of-shit salesman. Loss of coating is inevitable, and the
more you play the drum the more it wears off. I suppose the amount of
tension on the head could have something to do with the rate of loss,
but his statement about "too loose being better than too tight" is
largely nonsense. Regardless, a more important question to ask is "Is
the head stretched?" Loosen it completely or take if off the drum; the
surface of the head should be flat. If it is dished or dented, pull a
$15 bill out of your wallet and replace the head with a Remo Ambassador
or an Evans G2 coated.
