I don't necessarily need comps, but if you end up with some time to kill

I'll definitely be in touch.

I might be more interested in any local coffee roasters or coffee shops
that use local roasts...
...and any more of those fine Colorado micro-brewers. As I told you
before, there are so many Colorado brewers (must be the long winters)
and every one I've tried has had a great beer. It makes me wonder
about the ones I'm missing. :-)

Yeah, no kiddin'. That's a gig in a million, those girls be good, and
good together, backed by a good band.

Hitting that home page is the first time I've ever been happy to hear
a track auto-play (at the right volume!).

Great website, too.

"We live together, we eat together, we write together, shop together,
work out together, <our cycle starts coincide within 15 minutes>...
it's surprising we haven't killed each other."

I'll say.

They must have some kickass management.

(Much as I'd like to, it'd be $1000 overnight trip to Louisville.)

Wait a second, now I'm hearing another track... and another... I see
why LIAB is getting some play, the rockin'est tune.

It's on a fuckin' loop... and I'm still listening...

To say that any of these 4 tracks are by far the best "previously
unheard" I've ever encountered on the web would be to condemn them
with faint praise.

This thread's a bit old but the group is moving slow enough lately that it
shouldn't matter.

After I-don't-know-how-many-years of hanging here in RMMP I finally found the
opportunity for a face-to-face meeting with one of the regulars! Mike's
envious new gig brought him to Fredericksburg Texas last night and I was able
to make the trip over from Austin to shoot the breeze and see him play with the
band. It's a shame we only got to hang for a little while; it only took five
minutes to see that if we lived in the same town he'd be borrowing my tools and
I'd have him subbing for me on gigs. :-) I've already mentioned this in
another group where we both hang but it's worth repeating: It was a pleasure
meeting you Mike, and I hope it won't be the last time. Lobby the band to seek
out some Austin gigs! They'd be a great fit for the SXSW (South by SouthWest)
festival in March.

And Sam, I can verify that Mike's view from the kit on the stage with the
Angels would DEFINITELY be pure torture. It certainly would for me, but Mike
seemed to be dealing with it. :-)

I'm disappointing we couldn't hang more. I didn't see your rec.wood post
about coming until after today. Wish I had, we could've planned for
dinner or something.

BTW, when did you leave? Did you see that nut-job at the end?

I'm sure we'll get back there, at some point. Austin is such a huge
music town, you just can't stay away. There's talk of an opening slot
tour with Lady A in the fall, so you never know.

We left before the second band came on. Are you talking about the nut job who was chasing
you guys off stage yelling "One more song! One more song!"? He was pretty adamant! I
wonder if he was the guy who yelled out "FREEBIRD!" a bit earlier? LOL!

Yeah, that guy. He also yelled, "I'll give you thirty-five dollars!!"

I was told, "no encore," so I started cleaning up, because the "other
band" was giving our manager a hard time. (I think it's funny that a
band who was supposed to be an opener, who gets given the "prime" time
slot, then starts bitching about the headliner playing too long.)

So when we did the encore, I had unplugged everything and had a bunch of
static in my in-ears, and no input from my mp3 and some other chaos
going on.

It resulted in my counting off the wrong song, which was conveniently
only a bit faster than the song I was supposed to count off, and the
beat was close enough to not be a train wreck.

I remember the first thought that jumped into my head wasn't, "Oh crap,
I counted off the wrong song." It was, "Oh crap, I missed starting my
favorite song," because I really like the tune I was supposed to start. :-)

Normally a lurker here but trying to learn by reading. Why do you have
an mp3 player going during a show?
Thanks,
Tom J.
I get bored. ha!

It's so I can hear a tune, before I start it... while the artist is
introducing it or the audience is applauding the song we just finished.
Instead of looking at a chart and reading, "pop ballad / bo-diddley beat
/ intro: pat boone debbie boone / some notation & 76bpm" and waiting for
my brain to interpret all that, I just play the mp3 and *hear* what I'm
supposed to play. In about 2-4 seconds, I *hear* the tempo, the intro
fill, the beat, and the melody or guitar riff or whatever. Hearing music
is much more effective than reading a description of it.

I won't do that all the time, and certainly not after playing with the
same group/artist for a while, but it sure helps for subbing, church,
showcases (one-offs), weekenders... basically 70% of the live gigs most
pro/working musicians end up playing.

A few years ago, I was looking through my chart folder and was counting
them all up and realized that in one 2 year period, I had to learn a
little over 300 songs. Probably 1 in 25 songs is unique or memorable
enough to instantly pop into one's head after having only played it a
few times.... especially when your brain has become an assembly line for
songs.

So that's what I do. I have a music player or iTunes on the laptop (if
I'm also running any loops or whatever) with the songs loaded in the
order of the set list. The audio output goes into my metronome, and that
goes into my in-ear mixer, or straight to my in-ear buds. I use the
in-ears for a monitor mix, if available. If not, I still use the in-ears
for ear protection and to hear the click and cue music.

What a great idea. I play covers and for the life of me, I find the intros
to 3 or 4 tunes, that I've played for years, un-rememberable. I know as soon
as I hear the first few notes I'm good to go. The crowd never hears me
*catch on* to the tune, but I hate it. Consider the mp3 player idea stolen.

It's all yours. :-)
It's perfect for a cover band... I didn't even think about that.
As long as your player can edit a playlist easily, you're good.

Occasionally, I'll play for an artist for whom I'll run loops/backing
tracks, or do a special song in church with crazy arrangement (Black
Gospel stuff).
When there is limited rehearsal and songs with lots of stops and extra
bars and accented hits everywhere, I'll make an spoken cue track that
goes to the monitor sends.

Something like, "extra bar after the stop on one...... 3....2....1...."
"band comps the guitar riff on the repeat"
"2 bar diamond, modulate on the chorus..... 3....2.....1....."

stuff like that.

BTW, when did you leave? Did you see that nut-job at the end?

"FREEBIRD!" a bit earlier? LOL!
Yeah, that guy. He also yelled, "I'll give you thirty-five dollars!!"
Ha, I missed that part! Seems like there's one in every crowd.
I was told, "no encore," so I started cleaning up, because the "other
band" was giving our manager a hard time. (I think it's funny that a
band who was supposed to be an opener, who gets given the "prime" time
slot, then starts bitching about the headliner playing too long.)
"Funny", yeah... So the decision to do the encore was pretty much made on the
spot? The crowd certainly wanted one! Who made that call, your manager?
So when we did the encore, I had unplugged everything and had a bunch of
static in my in-ears, and no input from my mp3 and some other chaos
going on.
Yeah, I wasn't totally sure the band was going to come back on because it
looked like you were getting ready to deal with the tear-down. Good thing you
didn't get any farther before they decided to come back on and do one!
It resulted in my counting off the wrong song, which was conveniently
only a bit faster than the song I was supposed to count off, and the
beat was close enough to not be a train wreck.
Well I certainly didn't notice that; probably nobody in the crowd did either.
Did you catch any crap for it?
I remember the first thought that jumped into my head wasn't, "Oh crap,
I counted off the wrong song." It was, "Oh crap, I missed starting my
favorite song," because I really like the tune I was supposed to start. :-)
So the song you played for the encore had an introductory drum part that you
missed because you thought you were kicking off some other song?

I was told, "no encore," so I started cleaning up, because the "other
band" was giving our manager a hard time. (I think it's funny that a
band who was supposed to be an opener, who gets given the "prime" time
slot, then starts bitching about the headliner playing too long.)
"Funny", yeah... So the decision to do the encore was pretty much made
on the spot? The crowd certainly wanted one! Who made that call, your
manager?
I would guess. I was talking to the sound dude and the band leader
(acoustic, closest to you) gave me the head nod to come back up.

So when we did the encore, I had unplugged everything and had a bunch of
static in my in-ears, and no input from my mp3 and some other chaos
going on.
Yeah, I wasn't totally sure the band was going to come back on because
it looked like you were getting ready to deal with the tear-down. Good
thing you didn't get any farther before they decided to come back on and
do one!
I was honestly surprised by the crowd reaction at some mid-sized
honky-tonk out in the middle of nowhere Texas. I don't think any of us
expected that ovation and "encore" chant.

It resulted in my counting off the wrong song, which was conveniently
only a bit faster than the song I was supposed to count off, and the
beat was close enough to not be a train wreck.
Well I certainly didn't notice that; probably nobody in the crowd did
either. Did you catch any crap for it?
No, not at all. We had a good laugh over it. We all had our flubs that
weekend.
That's why you schedule shows out-of-town before hitting the CMA fest.

I remember the first thought that jumped into my head wasn't, "Oh crap,
I counted off the wrong song." It was, "Oh crap, I missed starting my
favorite song," because I really like the tune I was supposed to start. :-)
So the song you played for the encore had an introductory drum part that
you missed because you thought you were kicking off some other song?
No. It's just a great tune and has a really nice pocket.
I'm trying to get this from memory, but I'm pretty sure that wrong song
starts on the downbeat. I know there's no drum pick-up... not sure if
there was a guitar pick-up.

The correct song has an acoustic guitar pick-up on &4& before the
downbeat of bar one. When I heard that, the light bulb went on. That's
when I thought, "darn, I like that song." :-)

It's a shame they're so homely looking. :-)
Tour dates are on their myspace and facebook pages.
Well at least the roadie's job of leveling the stage will be easier.

WTG Mike! Ohio boy does good!
