Hi all I hope you guys had a great and safe 4th. My non ported bass
drum is driving me a little crazy. When I am playing it seems the
beater likes to bounce off the head a little too much making it
difficult to maintain and control my groove. How do i cure this? Is it
the non vented bass drum or my pedal set up? Other drummers have
played my kit and have had the same problem.

One of these maybe?

i am not going to answer your question, but i do have comment. after
years of playing 18' bass drums (which i still like to do) i found
myself with access to a practice room with a 24" bass (two heads no
port). after playing that thing for a few months my foot felt better
than ever. it was bouncey and wierd at first but it seemed to help
develop my foot in a way that both pleased and surprised me.

I have the same problem, and it's caused, in my case, by poor technique.
I let the beater rest on the bass head rather than rebound nicely. (aka
"burying the beater") This has two bad effects: first, as you've
noticed, it causes a second bounce if you use a non-ported resonant
head. Second, it deadens the sound, so if you like a somewhat boomy
tone (and I do) then it's much harder to get.

I'm trying to improve my playing, but I'm too old and lazy.

I dont bury the beater unless I want to deaden the sound as i am
playing it. Maybe I will loosen the batter head and see what happens.
Thanks

If you play heel up then you can try sliding your foot a little further back
on the pedal.
