Group,

I have a chance to pick up a set of Regular K hi-hats or a set of K
Constantinople hats for cheap.

Can anyone tell me the difference in character between the two types?

Can't afford both sets. Which ones should I get?

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd get the K hats. I've tried hard to give the Constantinople
cymbals a fair shake, but every one I've ever tried just sounds like crap to my
ears, and the hats were no exception. I don't understand what people see in
the Constantinople line; maybe it's the "mystique". I'd encourage you to try
them first though; I'm not a fan of "dark" hi-hats and you may find that your
tastes are completely opposite of mine.

I've been on the search for a second set of hi-hats and I've found very few
that I like. I have a set of 14" Sabian AAX Stage Hats that I love, and I
REALLY love the sound of the HHX Evolution crashes, so when I got a chance to
try both HHX Stage Hats and HHX Groove Hats I assumed I'd be in love with
either and have a hard time choosing. Meh; I didn't like either one! Then I
tried a set of 14" Zildjian A Custom Mastersounds and they blew me away; some
of the best sounding hats I've ever heard! I'm currently on the prowl for a
set of those... :-)

You tried the 12" A Custom Mastersounds? Picked some up about 6 years
ago, as much for a novelty and for the option of a bright sound as
anything, but they're now my universal-use hats for everything. Amazing
things.

It's funny how much of it depends on whar you're used to hearing. I've had
hats that sounded great in the store but just didn't blend the way I wanted
on stage, and I've had the opposite also.

For versatility though, the Zild Quick Beats I bought in '88 still work
great for about 95% of the stuff I play, and I just haven't heard anything
else in the shops that really catches my ear.

I had a set of Quickbeats for many years before I discovered the Sabian AAX
Stage Hats, and those sounded a lot better to me so I sent the Zildjians down
the road. I had a set of 13" A Zildjian Mastersounds (not the "Customs") for a
while that I used as alternates and they really didn't do much for me either,
so I sold those too. I'd kinda given up on Zildjians and really wasn't even
considering them in this recent quest until I heard the 14" A Custom
Mastersounds. But who knows, it's like you said; I could probably take a set
of those home and be totally underwhelmed after hearing them in a different
context. I guess there's nothing to do but have about a dozen different sets
of hi-hats and use the set that sounds the best at the time. :-)
