Again...
Last nights gig. We show up to find another band gear. Come to find out they
are the regulars, and are playing early. We set up on the other end of the
*stage* and try as I might, I cannot keep from boxing myself in. I even
pushed up to stop it from happening; nope. Gig went well though. House said
they have never had such a night in terms of people and bar. Good for us.

When walking into many of the clubs I've played, upon seeing the stage,
I will often say out loud, "Nice drum riser, where are you guys setting up?"

I know the feeling well. It seems like no matter how carefully I try to
gauge the distance from the wall when I set up, I always find that I'm still
about one inch too close.

As for the stage size - I have the guys pretty well trained now: they know
that I always use at least one 18" sub, usually two, for drum monitors so if
they see that the stage is too small for that then we're not going to be a
good fit for the place - physically or musiclly!

Mercifully most of the clubs we play now have bigger stages so I have plenty
of room for the pile.

There's a club called Cafe 9 in New Haven, it's a great little spot
for live music, especially originals, but the stage is not only TINY,
but its' in the front window.

So as the drummer you're:

a) Crammed in and scrunching up your elbows
b) Listening to the sound of our kit reflected off of the glass behind
you. Not good, if you haven't experienced it, and
c) Praying that you don't get too wired up and put your elbow through
the glass

It has its benefits, though, I'm going to see Adrian Belew there in a
couple of weeks :]
