Hi all,
I've just bought a Sonor Phonic kit, rosewood in & out, in the
following sizes: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14ft & 18x14. See pics (13" not
pictured). I *very* reluctantly sold a Hilite kit in order to make room
for this one, and I want it to make a change, really; I want standard
tom depths which these are, & I'm looking for a harder, sharper sound,
but I still want the sustain and musicality I got from the Hilites. I
used either clear or coated ambassadors, with clear ambassadors or
diplomats on the bottom & I was very happy with the sound of the
Hilites, but ultimately I felt it was a sound I could get from a new
Delite kit, so I thought I'd make the change.
The Phonics have evans G2 batters, which I'm going to change for coated
ambassadors as soon as I can, but any other suggestions welcome - I
want a lively tom sound, with maximum sustain.
The kick will be a challenge - it came with a coated ambassador batter,
which I'll probably change for a powerstroke3 as I need all the bottom
I can get from it.
I must say, these drums are *heavy*! Beautifully made though, they ooze
quality.
Any other experiences of these drums, esp. in these sizes, welcome.
All the best,
Jamie

Great looking... I'm a big fan of Evans G1 or G2 if you need a deeper sound.
I've never really experiment with reso heads... clear Evans G1 I would
assume. But ever since I switch from Remo to Evans I've been a big fan.

Anyway... Great looking kit.

If the edges are good, which I suspect they are, they'll sound great with
anything.

I've used Pins on mine, and coated Ambassadors. Presently I have them
configured in bebop mode. They sing like a mobster in the precinct office.

The bearing edges all look good. It's in really good condition for its
age, a couple of marks but nothing really. It's been lightly lacquered
at some point, so it looks a little darker than other rosewoods I've
seen. The 13" was bought seperately by the last owner, & I'm looking
into having chopped into 1 or 2 snares, anyone have any recommendations
for the job? I'm in London.
I've not been able to play them yet, I've tapped them, & the sustain is
indeed phoenomenal - I can't wait to gig them.Unfortunately, it's a
quiet time of year - I've got a gig on Monday, but I have to use my
20x8 kick due to stage size..
btw, the photo was taken by the last owner, I'm 5' 8" and would set
them *much* lower!

I use coated single ply ambassador weight batters and clear diplomat
weight resos on my Phonic bebop kit (10x10, 14x14, 14x18, snare du
jour). The bass drum has EMAD batter with the thinnest foam ring and an
EQ1 reso. I'm happy with the setup and they sing for days.

Gorgeous kit. But I'm gonna guess you're either 8'10" or play standing
up with the height of those toms!

He might *look* 8'10" behind those sonors, but keep in mind it's a jazz
kit in traditional sizes with an 18" kick so the whole kit is a scale
lower.

If he had those toms floating above a 24" bass drum, I'd agree.
Regardless, those are some purrty drums.
