Pete asked about the snare beds on a PACIFIC MAPLE with wood hoops I
just received.

The very day I got that thing I took it to a local club ,tuned it up
and used it with my beater set up. It stayed set up for a month.
When we loaded out the other day I turned it up and whada ya know?

No snare bed.

BTW...I liked the sound from my seat. I didn't get to hear it FOH.
I did have to lay a business card on the head to control a few
overtones.

No snare bed.
It may have one, but be so shallow it's not noticeable. One of the many
things I dislike about DW :-) is their snare beds. They are so "almost
not there" that their snare have way too much sympathetic buzz for me.
For a company who claim to know so much about the physics of drum sound,
you'd think they'd have figured out by now that a more pronounced snare
bed helps to tame sympathetic vibration and contribute to a more
controlled action from the snares.

The Recording Customs had NO snare bed at all, not even a shallow attempt at
one. The OEM bottom hoops are just flexible enough to let me tune the
buzzing out, albeit with just a little too much snare tension. Not a drum
for brushwork, that's for sure.

I have another RC beater that I cut snare beds in, but I just did it by eye
with no measurements. The experiment didn't work - as far as I tell both
drums have about the same amount of buzz. Thus proving that there's little
difference between having no snare beds and having bad snare beds :-)

In my experience with building snares, a deep and wide snare bed cuts
out a lot of sympathetic buzz.... couple with high tension of the bottom
head.

I don't know at what depth and width you obtain a discernible
difference. That would make for an interesting experiment that might
warrant an edited youtube video at some point in my future, however. :-)

the bed would have to be at least 3/16" depth and twice as wide as the
snare wire unit to be effective.
