Amp for electronic drum kit?

I'm a Bass Player asking this on behalf of a bud of mine who uses an
electronic kit.

At the moment he uses a 400 watt wedge with a 15" + horn. This is ok
for practice and rehearsals, and at larger shows the kit goes through
the PA anyway, but is there amplification available specifically for
electronic drums? It's for smaller gigs and also to give personal on-
stage monitoring with a bit of "oomph".

From what he's described to me he virtually wants a self-powered drum
fill - something in the nature of a 4-600 watt Bass combo, size-wise.

Price isn't a huge concern, within reason.

Thanks.

There is nothing marketed as such except the Roland suff that mounts on
the drum rack stand, for self practice only. The powered wedges are
great, also look at keyboard amps. You want full range. I would not
suggest a bass amp for that reason alone.

I use a Roland TDA-700 (300 Watts) for practice and smaller gigs. You
can find them for sale on lists sometimes but they're not made any
more. Very good amp made for edrums. For most gigs these days I use
a 600 watt Mackie sub and and one or two Peavey SP5-Gs with a 1200
Watt powered mixer. Most of the systems made specifically for edrums
these days are lower wattage ones, I think topping out around 200
watts or so. You can find a ton of info on this subject at Vdrums.com.

I use a Roland KC-550 for my electronic kit (which is small, and used
primarily for "acoustic" shows, ironcially with an acoustic guitarist,
and sometimes a bassist. It does reasonably, as it's a full range
mini PA. These can be used in stereo pairs, and I imagine they'd be
very useful for your buddy. This amp does sound quite a bit fuller
than most 15" wedges I've heard (nad it quite a bit heavier too).
It actually makes a decent bass amp as well, though no substitute for
my GK/Eden rig.

Roland does market drum centric amps but they're kinda a joke.
Here's what they list now, which has tremendous overlap with their
keyboard amp line. That KC-880 would be interesting to hear. But I
suspect a pair of KC-550's would make him smile, so long as $1100
worth of amps counts as "within reason."

But, for that money, a Behringer powered PA head one of their subs
along with that wedge he already has might be more satisfying.
Electronic drums are a bitch to amplify compactly because of the
dynamic and frequency range involved. You need big shit to move
enough air to make a bass drum sound right, and you need good smooth
highs to not make the cymbals make you want to scratch your ears off
your head.

Best of luck! And do drop by alt.guitar.bass - tis often a happy
place.

Best Regards,
