Well, that didn't last long. My lessons came to an abrupt halt when I got
the repair bill for moma's main transport; $2600. +. The tranny went south
and now everything extra is going there. I hope I can get back to 'em.

Same thing happened to our friends last year while we vacationed in
Gatlinburg. They have a 2001 Windstar. We have a 2000. It's just a
matter of time...

I'd read horror stories about this tranny going out, and mine went exactly
as the stories had described
I found that it was caused by water in the tranny coming from a leak in the
internal cooler. Check your dipstick sleeve for crud or rust. Check your
coolant for tranny fluid. Install an external cooler. It might save you some
$$$.

Ford hasn't fixed this friggin' transmission problem YET? We had a 1995
Windstar (the first year they made them, I think) and the tranny crapped
out at around 62,000 miles (2,000 miles after it went off warranty!).
Luckily, the dealer honored the warranty and fixed it, but not long
after that I started hearing that the transmission was the Windstar's
Achille's Heel, so we traded it in on an E-350 V-10 Econoline, which we
still have. Wonderful vehicle; incredibly reliable.

I've been a Ford fan for many years - at least of the trucks and full-size
vans, but I haven't seen anything else from them in years that I would take
a chance on buying. Even with the trucks I drew the line at the OH cam
engines, they run great but I have serious doubts about the ability of the
average mechanic to work on them properly.

There seemed to be a lot of cooked oil oneeverything. Was there something
that restricted the oil circulation?

Doesn't look unusual to me for a high-mileage engine. It gets pretty hot
under the valve cover and there's nothing but gravity to drain off the oil.

You don't have to lose a lot of pressure on an OH cam to cause damage. As
soon as you start getting some slop in the rod bearings the pressure starts
dropping on the cams, and as you can see from the pics they don't have
bearing inserts on top. The whole cylinder head is toast, and the cost of a
new one - not even installed - makes a new engine a sensible choice.

Been there, done that several times.
